About Me

About Me

Picture
I've been my own fitness advocate and coach my whole life.  My background is deeply rooted in swimming, trail running and yoga.   I workout to train my body but perhaps more importantly I workout to connect and feel healthy in my body, in my mind AND in my spirit.  Being outdoors helps to unite all three of these aspects.   There is something about being in a natural environment with natural lighting and natural terrain that harnesses the mind and spirit while the body works.

I've been teaching people for much of my life (including my two young children).  I love blending the magic of teaching with my love of fitness.  San Luis Obispo and it's surrounding abundance of trails, beaches and open spaces provides a wealth of natural beauty to fuel workouts.  I'm lucky enough to call this place home.

See you at a workout or on the trails soon!

I was given the gift of fitness from my Dad who I ran 5ks and 10ks with starting at 7 years old.  Also from my grandmother, who has been running the swim team in my hometown for decades and still does at 99 years old (yes, I’m serious).  She had me in the pool racing in the under 5 swimming group.  Fitness is  truly a gift and I feel lucky to have discovered it when I was so young.  I hope to pass it along to my kids and love seeing parents finding fitness with their families.

I studied Kinesiology at Cal Poly but was unsure what I wanted to do with the degree so I traveled and lived in Montana and Alaska.  I got my teaching credential at the University of Fairbanks while teaching in a small, one room K-12 Native Alaskan village school.  After 2 years of teaching in Alaska, I came back home to California and taught  in Northern California and then on the Central Coast.  When I had kids I was lucky enough to stay home with my babies.  I took time while I was home with my kids and thought about what I would like to do when I ‘went back to work’.  I knew pretty definitively it wouldn’t be teaching, at least not in the traditional sense.  I quickly found my path to personal training.  It blends my love of education and being part of someone's growth with my love of fitness.  It made sense.

I got my ACSM certification in 2015 after which I held an internship at a facility that focused entirely on functional movement.  The idea of training your body for life using movement patterns that mimic everyday life is not only smart and based in science but it also contributes to longevity.  (Who wouldn't want that?)  Because of this internship I completed my Applied Functional Science Certification through Gray Institute.

My Philosophy

Fitness isn't just muscle, bone and neuro system connection; it's a connection with the mind and spirit also.  So often our mind is the obstacle to our goals.  Our body is capable of more than we might think and often the challenge is figuring out how to get our mind on the same page as our body.  Spirit is different for everyone, but it's that one thing that pushes us to keep going.  Tapping into that spirit along your fitness journey can be incredibly powerful. If you have a body that's willing to try, a mind that's supportive and a spirit to motivate you...watch out world!  You are unstoppable!
